LaCie Rugged USB-C in test: Robust external hard drive

The LaCie Rugged USB-C meets all outdoor requirements while remaining fast.

LaCie Rugged USB-C Review: From the outside

The LaCie Rugged USB-C is available from 500 GB over 1 TB, 2 TB up to 4 TB storage space. We looked at the version with 2 TB in the test - more than sufficient for Otto-Normal users.

LaCie Rugged USB-C in test: The internal values

Most external 2.5 inch hard drives look similar. Metal housing, finished. The LaCie Rugged USB-C, on the other hand, is equipped with an orange bumper and thus stands out from the crowd. Below is the 2.5 inch standard design. On the flat back there is exactly one connection: USB-C. An orange LED flashes when reading or writing. It should be noted that it lights up rather dimmed and accordingly does not interfere. In addition to a USB-C to USB-C cable, a USB-C to standard USB cable is included in the package. But these could have turned out somewhat longer. The 2.5 inch disk comes in all situations without additional USB power supply.

LaCie Rugged USB-C Review: Conclusion

The orange cover not only serves aesthetics, it also protects the plate. For example, you could drive over with a 1,000 kilogram car. After that the plate does not look nice, but still works perfectly. At least the manufacturer says this. We did not drive the hard drive, but they dropped several times on tile floor. The altitude we have continuously increased to up to 2 meters. Except for a few small scratches, the record passed all the tests. And the most important? Also the data have survived. Nice thing. By the way, the manufacturer specifies a maximum drop height of 1.5 meters. We ignored that. The only catch is that there is no cover for the USB-C port. For an outdoor hard drive a real catch, finally catches a little bit of dirt in the opening.

With regard to inner values. They also look very good. In a read-write test with the "Disk Speed Test" app under Mac OS X Sierra, we get a reading of 123.5 MB and a write value of 118.9 MB per second for a test file of 1 GB. In other sequential tests - i. With large files where the hard drive can write or read the hard drive at the same time - the Rugged USB-C moved at a similar level around or just under 120 megabytes per second

Under real conditions, we can thus reach the benchmark values approximately. This is true for both USB 3.1 and USB 3.0, both on Macs and Windows PCs: not surprising since a mechanical hard drive can not excel both standards.

For tests with smaller files (including photos, text files and more), we also found very good values around or below 60 megabytes per second. Nice: Even under full load, the LaCie Rugged is not heard. And the heat development is also outstanding. More than handwarm the good piece is not. Very praiseworthy.

The LaCie Rugged USB-C with 2TB is truly worth your money. For all those who are on the road and do not want to miss a fast data storage, the small plate is excellent. Data transmission is fast, with USB-C the part is safe and thanks to the rubber the plate itself falls and co. The supplied cables could be somewhat longer and there is a protection cover for the USB-C-Port. Otherwise the LaCie Rugged USB-C does not allow any errors.
