Sony’s range of models is growing steadily, with the sense of this growth opening up only at closer inspection: In the Alpha series 200 and 300, Sony installed a CCD chip with 10 megapixels (α230, α330) and 14 megapixels (α380) The new Alpha 450 as well as Alpha 500/550 uses a CMOS for image recording. The “Exmor” sensor is also available in two resolutions, 12 megapixels at the Alpha 500 and 14 megapixels at Alpha 450 and 550. Through the bench, the image sensors used have APS-C format (image angle factor 1.5)
No slew monitor with the new model In the case of the housing design the Sony models are quite similar below 1000 Euro, although one half of the model palette (including the Alpha 450) is completely in black, while the other half has an anthracite colored top. The bottom line is that the cameras have a pleasing outfit and a satisfactory feel.
The Alpha 450 is a compulsory program with 2.7 inches, 76_800 RGB pixels and a lack of adjustability, while the top model Alpha 550 celebrates the event: 3 inches, 307200 RGB pixels The Alpha 500 (3-inch, 76800 RGB) and Alpha 380 (2.7-inch, 76800 RGB pixels) models can also be swiveled around the housing.
As with all Sony models, the buyer of an Alpha 450 is offered a built-in mechanical image stabilizer. Live-view is also on board - but you do not have to do without AF support. By means of magnifying function (7- / 14-fold), you can focus on the pixel ("MF Check LV") when taking pictures from the tripod.
What is missing is the Quick-AF-Live-View, which is found in Alpha 380 and the 500 series, where the camera uses a second sensor to generate the monitor image so that the deflection mirror does not have to be folded up and the fast Phase AF remains active. Outside of the live view mode, you can access the phase AF with 9 measurement points including a central cross sensor.
Equipment at the usual level In terms of equipment and functionality, the Alpha 450 closely follows the 500/550 models. The mode dial for the exposure programs is located on the left of the prism, and there are seven motif programs in addition to the standards (Auto, P, A, S, M). When recording, the 3-inch monitor serves as an information and adjustment center. The display is adjusted to the portrait / landscape format and goes out when the eye approaches the viewfinder while the autofocus is switched on at the same time - but only if you have previously activated the so-called Eye-Start-AF in the menu
Typical for the 400/500 series is a display mode in which the time and f-number series are arranged one on top of the other and move in the opposite direction according to the exposure metering or manual adjustment, and the exposure correction scale is shown directly below
With the D-Range button, the DRO function is activated, which attenuates the high-pitched contrasts, either automatically or in five manually selectable steps. In HDR mode, however, the camera takes two differently exposed images, which are then computed into a picture with generally better light and shadow imprints.
Image quality is equivalent to the 500 series In terms of image quality, the Alpha 450 follows the positive example of models 500/550, which have better results with their CMOS than the sister models Alpha 230/330/380 with CCD chip. The maximum limit resolution is 1267 LP / BH, with texture loss values between 0.7 and 1.1 (up to ISO 1600). With ISO 100, 10 aperture dynamics are possible, with ISO 1600 there are still 8.5 apertures. With these values Sony can compete well in the class up to 1000 euros.
Conclusion: The Alpha 450 is currently the most favorable model of the new Sony series with 14-megapixel CMOS as an image sensor, which is especially superior with higher ISO settings, the sister models with CCD chip (230/330/380) clearly superior . The price-balanced Alpha 380, however, in addition to the practical pivot monitor also Quick-AF live view. CMOS and 14 megapixels, combined with panic monitor and Quick-AF live view, are only available with the top model Alpha 550. 12 Megapixel plus panmonitor and Quick-AF live view also offers the Alpha 500, which is only 100 euros more than the Alpha 450 costs - a good compromise.
