In US Patent No. 8,593,564 filed independently of iPhone 6, Apple describes a “digital camera with adapter for a refocusable image,” according to the literal translation. This camera could take high-resolution “normal” digital pictures like a conventional digital camera (Fig. 6)
If necessary, however, it could also produce refocusable images by introducing a type of microlens carrier or filter (430) into the optical beam path between the lens (425) and the sensor (420) (FIG. 5). Such photos, which can subsequently be variably focused by the viewer at will, are already known by the Lytro plenoptic light field camera.
In the Apple patent, a possible use of such a system in mobile devices is generally considered, which may also mean an upcoming iPhone such as the iPhone 6. Use of the Apple light field system for video recordings would also be conceivable.
