Windows 10: Use old software - more tips

This feature monitors programs to ensure safe use of the system memory. If a program tries to execute code from the memory in an impermissible manner, the program is closed by Data Execution Prevention (DEP).

Tip 5: Unblock the file to prevent file loss

If an application does not start, it will either disable this feature or exclude the application from the scan.

Tip 6: Compatibility test with the Application Compatibility Toolkit

To configure the data loss prevention, go to the Control Panel. Click the System and Security link, click System, and then click Advanced System Settings in the window on the left. On the Advanced tab, select the Settings button in the Performance area. In the Performance Options dialog box, select the Data Execution Prevention tab. If the File Execution Prevention always closes a program that you trust, you can disable the Data Execution Prevention for the closed program. In this case, enable the option to disable File Execution Prevention for all programs and services except the selected ones. Then select the program that does not start with the Add button.

Tip 7: Compatibility with new Microsoft Office programs

An interesting collection for highly experienced users is Microsoft's Application Compatibility Toolkit. The collection includes the Application Compatibility Manager and Compatibility Administrator. They are used to test whether applications run under Windows 10.

Some users still use Microsoft Office 2000/2003. These versions do not support the new file formats starting with Office 2007. Microsoft is helping with the free Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack, which can be used to edit and read the new Office files under Office 2000/2003.
