Olympus OM-D E-M10 announced: High-end for beginners

The Olympus OM-D E-M10 is anything but economical. It combines the features of the Olympus OM-D E-M5 and the Olympus OM-D E-M1 in an even more compact case. The OM-D E-M10 comes with the 16-megapixel CMOS image processor of the E-M5, but without low-pass filter. With it the E-M10 inherited the contrast-AF-limited system of the E-M5. It uses 81 AF fields as in the E-M1. The Truepic-VII from the E-M1 is used as an image processor. The E-M10 autofocus is designed to be as fast as the larger models. The sensor shift image stabilization works in the three main axes tilt / pan / rotate.

Price and availability

The Olympus OM-D E-M10 also features the Truepic VII image processor for automatic image-error correction for Olympus M.Zuiko digital lenses. The image signal durations from the sensor via the monitor / viewfinder display to exposure should be only 7 to 10 ms thanks to Truepic-VII. This is more than twice as fast as many other cameras. Thanks to an image read-out frequency of 120 B / s, the E-M1 shows moving objects in the electronic viewfinder or on the LCD monitor virtually real-time without retightening. Switching between the viewfinder and the monitor is quicker.

The 3-inch LCD monitor with 354.666-RGB pixels that can be tilted by + 80 / -50 degrees is also known from the E-M1. The electronic viewfinder of the Olympus OM-D E-M10 is equivalent to the E-M5 with 480,000 RGB pixels and a magnification of 0.57%. As with the E-M1, sensitivities ISO 200-25.600 plus LOW (ISO100) are available in the E-M10.

The Olympus OM-D E-M10 also provides the E-M1 for exposure measurement and control. Live-Bulb / Live-Time-Function are also supplemented by the Live-Composite-Function with the E-M10. The combination of numerous long-term recordings ensures a better light of a starry sky. For image series the E-M10 comes to a maximum of 8 B / s.

The E-M10 takes up 1,920 x 1,080 pixels and 30 fps. You can also take photos without interruption of the video recording. A controllable stereo micro with windscreen filter is installed, an external connection is missing.

The WLAN image transmission remains as before. A new feature is the possibility to use the camera LCD monitor with a WLAN remote control and now also to change the focal range of the Olympus engine zooms

The 350 g light metal housing of the E-M10 is solid, but not weather resistant. It shows a somewhat changed arrangement and configuration of the control elements. Despite its very compact dimensions, the camera keeps itself well thanks to a larger handle. This can be supplemented by an optional additional handle. Although it does not contain an additional battery, thanks to its integrated quick coupling, it can be quickly removed for memory card and battery replacement. The E-M10 uses the smaller lithium-ion battery type BLS-5, as used in the E-PL5, to power the device.

The Olympus OM-E E-M10 will be priced in silver or with a black hammer-hit effect paint at the end of February 2017 for 600 euros, in the kit with the new 22.5mm flat motorzoom M.Zuiko Digital ED 3.5-5, 6 / 14-42 mm EZ for 800 euros in the trade come.
