Canon Powershot N in the test

The almost square shape of the Canon Powershot N is so simple and so typical for a camera that you are wondering why a creative designer did not come up with it before. The new Powershot digital camera is definitely an eye-catcher and, to put it bluntly, we find the design super.

Solid processing

The Canon Powershot N weighs almost 200 grams despite its small dimensions of 79 x 60 x 29 mm. The camera has three buttons and a tiny toggle switch. All are positioned on the right and left side of the camera. The tiny ones with just 3 x 6 mm size can only be hit with pointed fingers or a fingernail.

Innovative operating concept

The processing of the Canon Powershot N is overall very good, it has a robust effect. The covers for the accumulator and memory card compartment (as a storage medium serves a Micro SDHC card) are small and fummelig, but close perfectly. The cover for the USB port is a bit populous.

Default values for zoom and light level

Anyone who like us in principle without a manual to a new camera approaches, the Canon Powershot N quickly reaches its limits. The functions of the few control elements are clear, but where the hell can one set the focal range or trigger without touch on the display?

Image quality

Canon has cleverly solved this. Around the lens of the Canon Powershot N are arranged two rings with a diameter of approx. 68 mm. The ring closer to the camera housing has three small ripples on the top and bottom and can be twisted a few degrees to the right and left to adjust the focal length. The second ring fitted in front has the function of a trigger. Pressing lightly in the direction of the optical axis causes sharp points. If the ring is pressed beyond the focus position, the camera will trip.

With the arrangement and design of the zoom function and shutter release, we have a little bit of a sensation, but after a short familiarization time, the Canon Powershot N can be better served with a separate control element. Even the initially higher camera shake rate soon shrank to the normal noise.

The entire back of the Canon Powershot N forms the display. Because the camera is small, it still measures 2.8 inches, but has a resolution of 153,700 pixels and is designed as a touch screen. The display can be tilted by 90 °, thus many - even extraordinary - shooting positions can be mastered. Although the display brightness can be adjusted in five steps, the differences are very small and in practice little helpful. The illustrations of characters and symbols on the display are clear, the presentation of motifs sharp and the colors realistic. The touch screen recognizes two-finger gestures as used by the smartphone. It is easy to zoom, set the focus, and more.

The small toggle switch on the right side of the camera offers two positions. One "P" for program automation and the other for special effects / super-time magnifying glass. The basic settings are then made in the main menu of the Canon Powershot N. In the fast func menu on the left side of the screen, the necessary recording values are set, this type of menu control is simple and manageable.

Buying advice: How to find the right compact camera

The focal range of the Canon Powershot N is 28 to 224 mm (KB), the light intensity ranges from 3.0 to 5.9. Standard values, whereby one would have wanted especially a bit more wide-angle, because the KB-equivalent 28 millimeters quickly meet their limits in tight situations. Video captures the Powershot N in full-HD (1920 x 1080) resolution and stereo sound.

In combination with a smartphone, the Canon Powershot N can transfer pictures directly to the Internet. To do this, you load the app "Canon Camera Window" on the Android or iPhone and can then easily browse in pictures and videos on the Canon Powershot N. Even the post-geotagging of the recordings is possible, even if the smartphone was on the tour. A function for the remote control of the Canon Powershot N per app, however, is not a pity.

The 1 / 2.3-inch sensor is limited to the sensible resolution of 12 megapixels, which is good. However, the image quality of the Canon Powershot N is only moderate. Not disappointing, but other 12 MP cameras do more. The test values are rather unobtrusive, and we note the good deadleave values at ISO 100 (1.222 LP / BH) and ISO 400 (1.136 LP / BH), negative the high margin drop at the resolution at ISO 100 in the WW (426 LP / BH).

The camera gets worse in the visual assessment. The fact that the faces of our models are imperturbable in reality are clearly marked in the picture, even in the case of ISO 100. And the same local disturbances also make the stones and grasses of our test images appear somewhat blurred. This costs points.

Test Conclusion

Buying advice: The best compact cameras up to 200 euros

The Canon Powershot N is an unusual camera, not just because of its shape. Also the operating concept is new and convincing, the Canon Powershot N is well equipped and impeccably processed. But the picture quality should be better.
