IPad Air 2, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.5, and the Lenovo Thinkpad 10 in the comparison test: For a long time, high-quality and lightweight 10-inch tablets with a high-resolution display had the choice between an iPad from Apple and a device with Android as the operating system. Samsung was and is the clear market leader with the Galaxy Tabs. With Windows as operating system there was in this form factor only the Surface 2 with the badly restricted Windows RT or the much heavier Surface 2 Pro, both from Microsoft. This has changed with the Bay Trail-T processor from Intel.
Apple iPad Air 2: Rapid Three-Stroke
Because this quad-core processor still sails under the designation Atom, but with power and battery-time has little to do with the aemic processors of the netbook era. However, the ARM Group has not slept in recent months: Apple sends the super-flat iPad Air 2 with the brand-new A8X triple-core processor to the start. The Samsung Exynos processor in the Galaxy Tab 10.5 with its brilliant AMOLED display has no less than eight cores.
The first tablet from our infernal trio is the new edition of flat MOBILE COMPUTING. The iPad Air 2 is a thinner than its predecessor at 6.1 millimeters, and a real light weight at 444 grams.
Lenovo ThinkPad 10: Business Tablet
Nevertheless, the Apple tablet with its metal housing is stable and torsion-resistant. The 9.7 inch diagonal IPS display, like its predecessor, displays 2048 x 1536 pixels, thus providing the 4: 3 aspect ratio that is pleasing for the portrait mode. A plus is opposite the tablets of Lenovo and Samsung the largely antireflected screen. The round home button now also serves as a fingerprint reader, which has the iPad with the Samsung Galaxy S mean. Lenovo has a separate reader on the right rear edge of the case.
Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5: Full color with Super-AMOLED
So all three tablets are the same. The gloss piece for the new iPad, however, sits inside the aluminum case: the new A8X processor. The 64-bit ARM SoC (System on a Chip), developed by Apple itself and now produced at TSMC, has three cores operating at a clock rate of 1.5 GHz. The memory has doubled to two GB. In processor performance, the Apple processor surpasses the competition of Intel and especially Samsung. For example, in the Geekbench 3 for the A8X, we measured 3828 points at the Multicore race against 3305 meters at Lenovo and only 2711 points at the Samsung. Even more clearly, the A8X has the lead in the single-core test.
Here he is 60 per cent faster. Very good is also the recharge time with more than 10 hours at the Peacekeeper Webbenchmark. There the iPad also carries out the performance measurement. With the 3D benchmark 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited the pattern is repeated: Apple's iPad is by far in the lead. The PowerVRGX6650-GPU with six cores is responsible for this. With the Apple M8 is even a coprocessor built, which supports the A8X in the evaluation of the internal sensors. With 128 GB flash memory and LTE, our test device is the top model of the model family, but it costs more than 800 euros.
As before, Schmalhans is the master of the kitchen. There is a lightning port and a nano-SIMEnschub - nothing else. IOS 8.1 is preinstalled as an operating system. It also includes the Office Apps Pages, Numbers and Keynote, and iMovie for video editing. Apple's operating system can be operated smoothly as soon as you have the essential gestures intus.
It is visually appealing, mainly due to its refined transitional animations, and it has a plump stuffed appstore. However, what is missing is a multi-window mode for multi-tasking apps. The high performance of the processor is always confined to an app and some background processes.
With a weight of just under 600 grams, the ThinkPad 10 is the heavyweight in our tablet trio. The slightly thicker metal case behind a flap on the left side of the device leaves room for a full-fledged USB socket. On the right side, another flap covers the MicroSD slot and the slot for the SIM card. Our 830-euro test device is equipped with LTE and a 128 GB mass storage.
The 10-inch IPS touchscreen delivers 1920 x 1200 pixels, the lowest resolution in the test field. In practice, however, this is sufficient. The display is not as good as the Apple or the Samsung tablet, with maximum brightness adjustment but also in the open. The memory is sized with four GB for an atomic tablet large, common are two GB. The 64-bit version of Windows 8.1 Professional is used as the operating system.
This allows the tablet to be integrated into a corporate environment with Active Directory without restrictions. In addition, the mass memory can be encrypted with bit lockers. A TPM (Trusted Platform Module) as key storage is on board. With the basic equipment of the 830 euro tablet belongs a Wacom digitizer along with a suitable pen. It is not only pressure-sensitive but also equipped with a digital eraser at its end.
In the benchmarks, the Lenovo tablet with its Atom processor lies behind the iPad, but before the Samsung Tablet. The ThinkPad must be defeated only during the battery life. With 6 hours and 20 minutes under full load, however, it is easy to carry out an entire working day in practice. As an accessory, Lenovo offers a desktop dock and an Ultrabook keyboard for about $ 100 each.
We looked at the keyboard for the test. It does not have a movable hinge, but can only hold the tablet in two positions: once flat above the keyboard for transport and once tilted. The tablet is magnetically fixed in both positions and the keyboard is powered by the tablet.
Conclusion: Hell is the iPad
The third one is the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5. It rises as a representative of the Android tablets in the ring. With a thickness of 6.6 millimeters and a weight of 467 grams it almost reaches the model dimensions of the iPad Air 2 from Apple. The case is made of plastic, but it is stable and has a good grip.
With a diagonal of 10.5 inches, the Samsung Tablet has the largest display of the trio, and it also represents the highest resolution with 2560 x 1600 pixels. But above all, it provides with its Super AMOLED panel bright colors and a Maximum contrast, since there is no background illumination in this panel technology, but the pixels themselves.
Samsung does not use a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor in the Galaxy Tab S, but an Exynos Octa processor from its own production. The eight-core SoC actually consists of two quad-core CPUs and a Mali graphics unit. A CPU with four cortex A15 cores and a 1.9 GHz clock frequency is responsible for computer-intensive tasks, the second with four economical Cortex-A7 cores for routine tasks with low processor load. Despite the effort, the Samsung Tablet sorts itself behind the Apple and the Lenovo tablet with computing and 3D performance.
Only with the Akkulaufzeit it can get more than eight hours without power socket the second rank behind the iPad. The memory is 3 GB larger than Android tablets. It is supposed to offer reserves for multitasking, because Samsung has extended the operating system by a splitscreen function for the simultaneous use of two selected apps. The mass storage is significantly smaller with 16 GB than in the case of Apple and Lenovo. But the Galaxy also costs only 600 euros and can also be expanded with MicroSD.
Apple has done a great job with the iPad Air 2. It is slim, light, fast and persevering. With the iPad, you have to fully engage with the Apple ecosystem, which is not necessarily everyone's business. Also it is in the tested configuration with 800 euro quite expensive. At Samsung you get for 600 euros also a light tablet with Android system, great super-Amoled display and lush software offers. Lenovo ThinkPad 10 is the best synthesis of entertainment and work. However, with 830 euros without a keyboard, it is even more expensive than the iPad.
