Onkyo TX-NR646 review: Dolby Atmos & DTS: X at a good price

Video has tested the Onkyo TX-NR646: The Japanese manufacturer wants to prove in 2017 that Heimkinofans with their entertainment centers of the middle class are already almost top-class technology served. The new Dolby Atmos and DTS: X feature-rich Dolby Atmos and DTS: X will also play a key role, while DOX certification in the 6 Series is still missing.

Speaker configuration in minutes

But in turn. The receiver itself is good to handle, as with 9.4 kilos over one kilo lighter than the comparable previous year model NR636. The dimensions remain unchanged. There are some changes in the connections: On the front, Onkyo renounces the additional USB connection. The number of HDMI inputs increases to seven. The HDMI outputs are arranged more logically than before centrally between HDMI input 1 and Ethernet connection. A coaxial one had to give way to a second optical audio input.

The AVR remote from Onkyo is a true constant of the entertainment electronics and will remain almost unchanged this year. Only a few buttons have been renamed, such as the one for connecting a digital VCR. It is now called "Streamingbox" to drive candidates like Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV or the Nexus Player. The Japanese have also developed their remote control app for those who do not like to leave their smartphones out of their hands. The "Onkyo Remote 3" is available free of charge.

Lesetipp: Optimizing AV receivers - how it works

Speaking of: In terms of networking, the NR646 is a true all-rounder that leaves hardly any wishes unfulfilled. The relevant music services Spotify, Deezer and Aupeo! Are pre-installed. Spotify can be played directly from the smartphone or tablet via the Connect function. Great for Apple fans: The AirPlay function, which is standard with many manufacturers, was also included in the repertoire. The 646 so that music directly from the iPhone to the sound system. If you want, you can also control the flexible network via Bluetooth. The connection is simple and works in seconds.

The 7.2-channel receiver is easy to use anyway. Thanks to the AccuEQ automated room calibration, the loudspeakers are configured in just a few minutes. The menu navigation is very simple, so the AVR is ready for operation in the shortest possible time.

In our test with a 7.1 speaker setup from Heco plus Samsung Blu-ray Player, the Onkyo shows how much the medium class has to offer tonally. The popular formats Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio are played very respectfully at the great Actionfinale in "Expendables 3" and the Bibelepos "Exodus". For the Dolby Atmos Blu-rays "Ambra" and "Attention - A Live in Extremes", the receiver interprets, without any Atmos, which particular experience is capable of producing object-oriented spatial sound. Only the bass load is somewhat unbalanced in noisy film scenes.

Blu-ray Disc: Ultra-HD Blu-ray Disc What does the new disc have?

Atmos fans can look forward to it, at least if the Hollywood studios soon should provide more program replenishment. For customers who are more confident about DTS: X, Onkyo has announced a firmware update during the year.
