Are you one of the smartphone streamers within the category of music consumers and are not satisfied with your TV sound? Then the Musicbox M from Canton would be the right thing for you. Your smartphone is also an Apple offspring? Then watch out and read on!
20 liter craftsmanship
In principle, the Musicbox M is an active speaker with docking station for iPod / iPhone and streaming possibility via Bluetooth also from other mobile phones. Thanks to analog and digital inputs, you can also feed your TV sound into the music box. This option brings a great benefit, because the active Canton box will save you a hi-fi system or a soundbar.
Bassplay without borders
Certainly, you will not be able to replace a stereo or home cinema system with 2.1 or 5.1 speakers. But for an estimated 80 per cent of all picture and sound consumers, the demand of this sound center is sufficient.
Conclusion
The approximately 20-liter box is made of solid MDF (Middle Density Fibreboard) and not of a choppy, thin-walled plastic. Here you can find classic loudspeaker craftsmanship a la Canton. Two 15-centimeter coaxial chassis with aluminum diaphragm and fabric tweeter are installed. The digital amplifiers as well as the DSP chip for the signal processing including active control of the four chassis come from Texas Instruments
In addition to the analogue and the optical digital input, there is an FM antenna input and a subwoofer output on the rear panel. The latter needs who is not satisfied with a 45 Hertz lower limit frequency and just under 100 decibels maximum sound level and would like to connect an external subwoofer. This is because an optional docked subwoofer relieves the coax drivers and thus raises the possible maximum level.
The hearing test showed that this option is hardly necessary. The Musicbox plays not only high levels, but also low frequencies sovereign. Thanks to electrical high-pass filtering, the sound reproduction is up to 45 hertz, with a very high level of filtering, which helps the load capacity.
The song "More Love" by e-bassist Victor Wooten shows the level and bass potential of the Canton sound center. Even Peter Weniger's "Half-Life" jazz album does not set the box in front of unsolvable tasks: the power of the electric bass from the two chassis is more than impressive, but the desire for an additional subwoofer is not an option
You can switch between Stereo, Wide and Surround modes with the supplied remote control. In most cases, even with pure stereo recordings, the surround mode was the better playback choice.
Monaural parts remain clean in the middle even when the seat is positioned on the side. The Wide mode pulls the stage extremely wide. If you're not sitting in the middle of the music box, this DSP variant has a good width staggering.
For the TV sound the Canton Musicbox M is an enrichment. For Dolby digital signals, a PCM downmix must first be set up in the TV or player so that it can process the signal. But then the TV sound is hardly recognizable. The bass content as well as the clear mids and highs are a pleasure.
Whether streaming via Bluetooth in CD quality or direct contact via dock, Cantons Musicbox M replaces some Hi-Fi system and some soundbar.
