Interview: Norbert Höpfner from Samsung about "The Blue Angel"

Norbert Höpfner: At present, a total of 54 printers and multifunctional devices in color and black and white are awarded the Blue Angel. The certification already refers to Directive RAL-UZ 171, which has been in force for all newly tested devices since the first January of last year. Thus, almost the entire current portfolio of Samsung, including our ten multifunctional A3 copying systems, carries the new eco-label.

Business & IT: How many printing systems from Samsung already have a Blue Angel?

Currently, there is no other manufacturer in the laser sector that can offer more devices that carry the new Blue Angel as an eco-label. The complete list of printers and multifunctional devices certified to RAL-UZ 171 can be found on the website of the Blauen Engel in the category "office equipment" with print function - RAL UZ 171.

Why is the Blue Angel so important for Samsung?

Norbert Höpfner: For more than 35 years, the Blue Angel has been one of the most prestigious eco - labels in the world and, in our opinion, is the most important label in the United States. The participation of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, the Environment Agency and various independent bodies guarantees the user both the Neutrality as well as the consistently high standard of award criteria. The continuous adaptation of the directives ensures that the equipment thus distinguished actually satisfies the current environmental and health requirements.

This can be seen, for example, in the integration of the fine dust measurement, which was introduced with the RAL-UZ 171. For the first time, a distinction is made between fine and ultra-fine particles so that the new certification guarantees a particularly low level of exposure to pollutants in the room air Br>

Will there be only Samsung printers with blue angels in the future?

Samsung is able to control the installed components of its devices due to the high manufacturing density of up to 95 percent. For this reason, we have always been producing printers and multifunctional devices which are largely recyclable and which result in as little strain as possible. This is also evident from the fact that even some of our older systems have already met the criteria of the current Blue Angel from the outset.

Norbert Höpfner: This is our declared goal! The protection of users' health and the environment is a topic that is of great importance to Samsung. Samsung has been one of the most environmentally friendly companies in the world for years and has been recognized as the most sustainable technology company in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) in 2011.

In order to protect the environment and improve the health protection of its customers, Samsung launched the "PlanetFirst" initiative in 2009 and since then has invested far more than two billion euros in the research and development of sustainable products and environmentally friendly production facilities. The aim of all our activities is to make "green" management, products, processes and jobs.

A specific management guideline includes the ongoing improvement of environmental friendliness with regard to all our business activities, including product design, manufacturing processes and workplace procedures. The ultimate goal of Samsung is to contribute to a life with a good ecological conscience - through technologies that enrich the lives of people.

Norbert Höpfner: Absolutely, because the Blue Angel is now considered a standard specification for pressure equipment. With the reputation of being the most comprehensive and rigorous environmental certification for office equipment worldwide, the label is of immense importance in the project business with authorities and organizations. This is where devices without this distinction usually fall through the grid very quickly.

As a result of the increasing awareness of the responsibility of companies with regard to environmental and health impacts, the seal is becoming more and more relevant. The calls for tenders, which have the presence of the Blue Angel as a standard requirement, are growing ever more, and are now also an absolute must in this area.

Norbert Höpfner: As already mentioned, our "PlanetFirst" initiative deals with the optimization of the entire value chain of our products. For printers and multifunctional devices, Samsung also offers a unique toner-saving feature that reduces consumption by as much as 30 percent, resulting in much less waste.

Quality losses do not have to be taken into account, since not the resolution is reduced, but only the toner order per point. To this end, we also offer a free take-back program of used toner cartridges to deliver them to recycling.

Do such awards actually play a role in project delivery?

What else is there besides the Blue Angel on the environmental agenda at Samsung?
