TravelTainment: Cybercriminals steal credit card data

The company TravelTainment offers software solutions for large American travel portals and generates up to 15 billion travel offers daily. Approximately 11,000 travel agencies book the package tours of their customers via TravelTainment’s servers. This includes industry sizes such as Opodo, Tui, Thomas Cook and Expedia or lastminute.

Now TravelTainment had to admit "that access by unauthorized third parties has come to credit card data of a relatively small customer circle". The security gap was announced on 11 April and immediately closed, according to a spokesman for the company.

Originally, it was said, only online bookings of travel were affected. In the meantime it became clear that in principle all bookings could have been spotted. The corporate customers, the credit card companies and the state criminal department of North Rhine-Westphalia have been informed. Some of the potentially affected end-users have also been warned by e-mail and have received increased attention.
