Colorfoto.de Nikon D5000

With the D5000 separates Nikon from familiar numbers games: Between D40 and D100 so far every full decade was connected with a Nikon model of the consumer class. D200 and D300 stand for the semiprofis with magnesium housing, while in the proven professional models in advance steps – from the D1 over the D2 up to the current D3. With the D5000 Nikon introduces for the first time a four-digit type designation. In the Nikon hierarchy, the new is arranged between the entry-level camera D60 and the upscale D90. And while the compact plastic housing of the D5000 emphasizes the relationship to the D60, the internal values create a connection to the D90. These include 12-megapixel sensor, live-view and HD video.

A special kind of swing monitor

The D5000 is, however, more than a stripped-down D90 and sets its own accents: As the first Nikon SLR it has a rotatable and swivelable monitor. The construction of the monitor is at first glance a necessity, but in practice it has proved successful. The monitor is connected to the housing by means of a hinge, which is not mounted on the side as usual, but on the bottom of the housing. If you fold the monitor downwards so that it is at a 90 degree angle to the back of the housing, you can see the image from the top like a previous light shovel.

Less grippy than higher Nikon models

Live View, Video and some extras

If you now rotate the monitor 90 degrees around its axis, the "light shaft" functions in the portrait position. It is also easy to photograph around the corner or overhead, and even self-portraits with visual inspection on the monitor are no problem. The natural camera system remains almost untouched, which can not be maintained with a side-swinging monitor. For safe transport, you can fold the monitor back into the case so that the back side of the monitor comes out of the way.

Known operating concept with few direct accesses

The 2.7-inch monitor is slightly larger than the D60 (2.5-inch) but offers only a third of the resolution of the D90's 3-inch monitor. Their Pentaprisensucher also attracts with an effective magnification of 0.6x more enthusiasm than the rather small mirror searcher of the D5000 (0,49x). However, you do not have to do without the grid lines in the viewfinder.

Apart from the swingmonitor, the D5000 is the same as for the D60: neatly processed, but less gripping than with higher-quality Nikon models. In addition, the D5000, typical for Nikon's entry-level models, does not have a built-in AF motor, so you can only use Nikkor lenses with your own AF motor (all AF-S models) or comparable types of third-party manufacturers. The D5000's Multi-CAM 1000 AF module is known from the D90, and operates with 11 measurement points including a central cross sensor.

The D5000 is equipped with an image cleaning system, in which a film is set in motion in front of the image sensor with four different shaking frequencies in order to dispose of adhering dust. As a further measure against annoying dust in the housing, Nikon calls the "airflow control" system, which wants to control air turbulence through the mirror impact so that the dust does not land on the sensor, but at a location in the camera housing where it does not interfere Code>

With exposure programs the D5000 is abundantly blessed. In addition to standards such as full-, program-, time- and aperture-control, supplemented by manual setting of time and aperture, one has access to six motif programs via the mode dial. A further 13 variants can be reached via the setting "Scene". Unlike the D60, the D5000 has an exposure bracketing system, which can also be extended to white balance and active D-Lighting. Active D-Lighting is Nikon's contribution to contrast compensation for critical subjects. The function is available in four levels or as a motive-dependent automatic. In addition, D-Lighting is one of the many post-processing features of the camera. However, only three settings are available.

If you press the Live View button to the right of the monitor, it can be used as a motif searcher. For automatic focus, the camera uses only the contrast AF, available in four modes. In the normal mode there is a measuring field marker to be positioned freely on the screen, which is larger in the wide angle mode. If, on the other hand, you switch to Portrait AF, the automatic face detection is switched on, which locates up to five faces - to the nearest one.

These three operating modes are also known from the D90, new is the motif tracking. You can activate it by pressing the up arrow key. You can then observe how a yellow rectangle "tracks" a previously targeted motif. In the live image, you can see recording data and grid lines, as well as an exposure simulation is possible, while a live histogram is in vain.

In Live View mode, press the OK button to start the video recording. You can exit by pressing the OK button again or by pressing the shutter button. At the same time, the video is stopped and a recording is taken. While or before the video function is activated, you can set an exposure compensation or store an exposure meter (by pressing the AEL button). The depth of the lens can be adjusted by means of the adjusted aperture, and the image stabilizer of the kit lens helps to prevent camera shake. The autofocus does not adjust the sharpness initially set, but manual focusing and zooming are possible.

Image quality: Low noise and low texture loss

Videos are recorded in the Motion JPEG format (AVI), three image sizes are possible: In addition to 640_x_424 and 320_x_216 pixels, the HD format can be set with 1280x 720 pixels. In all three cases, 24 frames / s are recorded. However, HD videos are limited to 5 minutes and a maximum file size of 2GB, while the other formats can take up to 20 minutes. The HDMI interface and the appropriate cable (not included in the scope of delivery) allow you to view high-definition images or videos in 16: 9 format on a HD-capable TV. Sound only records the D90 in mono, which is sufficient as a pilot tone for audio dubbing.

In the operating concept, the D5000 is strongly leaning on the D60. The 2.7 inch monitor is not only responsible for image reproduction, but also displays all necessary data when recording. Conveniently, the display adapts when you switch from landscape to landscape and vice versa. In the case of the D60, however, the monitor also goes out sensor-controlled when the eye approaches the viewfinder. For the corresponding sensor, the folding monitor of the D5000, however, apparently left no more space, which is a pity.

The display modes "classic" and "graphical" are already known - also the fact that in the graphics mode you can admire not only an iris diaphragm, but also the graphical implementation of the mode dial from the top of the housing. Nonetheless, many people will prefer the classic display, with the essential information such as time, aperture, remaining image capacity and exposure correction displayed. Classic and graphical displays are available in three color versions, as well as a background image of the memory card (SD).

Access to the most important functions such as sensitivity, white balance, resolution, exposure metering, AF mode, exposure and flash exposure correction is provided through the data monitor. To set a function, first switch to the corresponding menu window (corresponds to the "classic" display) with the Info button (green dot), in order to move a yellow marking to the desired field with the 4-way button. Pressing the OK key will take you to the actual setting menu, where the parameters are illustrated by suitable example pictures. Unfortunately, you can not change setting values directly in the display window, for example by turning the dial (as with the Canon EOS 500D). This is only possible to a very limited extent by linking the function key to a specific display window. In general, the dense information and small fonts complicate the operation, but the display window of the EOS 500D is a whole lot clearer and clearer.

With its 12-megapixel CMOS and Expeed image processor, the D5000 creates a picture quality almost at the level of the more expensive D90. The resolution of the D5000 is 1214 LP / BH at ISO 100 and still 1180 LP / BH at ISO 1600. In addition, the camera shines with very low values for the texture loss (maximum 0.2). In the case of noise, it is noticeably inferior to the competitor EOS 500D with VN values between 0.7 and 1.5 and only with ISO 1600 the sister model D90 (VN 1.1). Also nice is the dynamic range between 10 and 9 iris in the range of ISO 100 to 1600. Keep in mind the setting for Active D-Lighting: D-Lighting is activated in automatic mode at factory, which is under unfavorable conditions Can lead to increased noise in shadow parts. Tip: D-Lighting only needs to be switched on when the subject actually asks for it.
