HTC Vive: Valve offers VR headset free for developers

The Vive virtual reality headset developed by Valve and HTC will receive some selected developers free of charge. Valve spokesman Doug Lombardi told the IT portal “Ars Technica.”

According to Lombardi, the company is hoping for numerous inquiries from the developers. With the free release of the VR headset Vive, Valve and HTC want to achieve increased interest from the developers, which are to develop mainly on the basis of Valve hardware games.

So far, the first indie developers such as Bossa Studios, known for games like "Surgeon Simulator" or "I am Bread" were equipped with the HTC Vive. From the beginning of April, a website will be launched, which interested developers can apply for using a development kit.

Also at the price of the HTC Vive there is new information. As HTC announced, customers should expect a slightly higher cost than other similar devices. For comparison, the Oculus Virtual Reality Pioneer sells its Rift DK2 for 350 US dollars.
