The user numbers of the now 12-year-old operating system Windows XP sink. As Net Applications recently announced, its market share shrank to around 17.2 percent, equivalent to every sixth PC evaluated. In the previous month, 23.9 percent of all Windows users used the old OS.
Since April 2017, Windows XP is no longer officially supported by Microsoft. Since then, the share of users has declined. At this point, about 26.29 percent of all users used Windows XP, while in September it was still 23.87 percent. However, a sharp decline to 17.18 percent is now registered in October.
Not least the two versions of Windows 8 benefit from this movement. The market share of both Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 grew. The share of Windows 8.x users in October rose to 16.8 percent, which is 4.54 percent more than the month before. Significantly, since the market share has fallen to a record low since September.
Also for Windows 7 an increase could be measured. Thus, at 53.05 percent, more than half of all Windows users still use it. Despite the marginal increase of 0.34 percent, it remains the most popular Windows version.
Overall, however, the market share of Windows decreased. From 91.98 percent to 91.53 percent, its market presence decreased. Linux also lost users - the value decreased by more than half to 1.41 percent. By the same token, the share of Apple's Mac OS X grew from 6.38 percent to 7.05 percent.
