Playstation 4 Praxistest: no revolution, but overdue upgrade

Sony provided press staff with the Playstation 4 for a hands-on test. About two hours we were able to drive the time with the Xbox-One competitor at an event in the Munich East. Available were various launch titles such as Killzone: Shadowfall, Knack or Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag. In this article you can read about our impressions from the Praxistest to the Playstation 4 as well as our assessment of the console. Release date in the United States for the PS4 is on November 29, 2013.

Playstation 4 in the Praxistest: Performant and silent

In advance: Sony provided us so-called debug consoles. These offer the same hardware as the final model and are actually intended for developers. With a reason for this is that Sony had at the time of our visit still no final software on the PS4 devices had run. The available games were largely demo versions, which should give journalists only a first impression about the performance and visual quality of the respective games.

Playstation 4 in practice test: Conclusion

The Good: Even laymen see a clear lead in technology when comparing different PS4 titles with those of the predecessor Playstation 3. Something disappointing is that the jump from the PS3 to the Playstation 4 for graphics-accustomed PC players is rather small and for those by no means a revolution. The graphics of the tested PS4 games were high-quality, but sets no new standards. Common tongues could now say that the so-called next-gen consoles currently only offer current-gene graphics. Here, over time, it will be clear how well developers can better exploit the uniform hardware of the PS4 platform.

Very good and amazing was the performance of the mentioned games. Knack, the new Assassin's Creed: Black Flag or Killzone: Shadowfall offered supple 60 fps (Frames per Seconds) on a crisp 1080p resolution with detailed textures and elaborate, dynamic light effects. The performance of the Playstation 4 games sank in action scenes with many physics effects as well as in panoramic views with high far-sightedness, countless objects and details. Also the loading times, especially those of a technically elaborate Killzone, were pleasantly short: very nice, considering that you have to run into the pocket much lower for the hardware in current PC games, which should run smoothly and similar performance Code>

Among the special features comes that Sony has trimmed the hardware on whisper quiet. Although the test environment was rather loud and there was partly much operation. But in quiet moments, we could not let us listen to our ear. Subjectively rated barely brummende fans or other operating noise can be heard, the cozy living room players in quiet moments the fun could spoil. Here, Sony compared to so many predecessors and competing product has thus significantly increased. It would be a good idea to make a comparison with the Xbox One, which we would like to present to you in due course.

The Playstation 4 - judging from the first practice test - is not necessarily a game revolution. Sony and / or the gamemakers hieven gaming not for the time being "to the next level". Instead, owners of the now over eight years old Playstation 3 get a long overdue upgrade. If you do not have a game console, you will not have to buy Playstation 4. However, anyone who likes to play, want to indulge his hobby and appreciate the comfort factor of a console against the PC, will be able to make little mistakes with the Playstation 4.
