Canon EOS 650D in the RAW test

The Canon EOS 650D is a consumer reflex camera for 700 euros with adjustable 3-inch touch screen, which complements the other controls sensibly. On its hybrid CMOS, the Canon EOS 650D has, in addition to the 18 megapixels that are used for image recording, additional centered pixels, which enable a phase AF on the sensor in the LV and video mode. Despite this, the Canon EOS 650D focuses much slower (1.67 s) in the Live View than in the viewfinder (0.31 / 0.49 s)

Image quality in RAW mode

For JPEGs, the strong contrast enhancement of the Canon EOS 650D results in an unnaturally hard image impression. With RAW this phenomenon can be avoided, as the flatter course of the DL curves proves. In addition, the RAW images of the Canon EOS 650D developed with Lightroom (standard settings) benefit from the better texture (max. 0.4 kurtosis) and a limit resolution of about 200 LP / BH higher, which almost corresponds to the level of the 24 MP camera Sony NEX-7 (52 points in the test). Our low-noise RAWs show a more granular noise than the JPEGs.

Note: This is the RAW test of the Canon EOS 650, which focuses solely on the image quality of the digital SLR camera in RAW mode (more about our test procedures and the new RAW test). For all technical details of the camera and a comprehensive review, including the evaluation of processing and operation, read our JPEG test of the Canon EOS 650D.
