Philips 42PFL7906K in the test

There is hardly a stand in the TV industry that is more solid, more stable and more stylish than the Philips 42PFL7906K. It must be, because it keeps the panel tilted a few degrees backwards. The front windscreen protruding above the housing edge hovers only a little over a millimeter above the table – great.

The white finish of the front panel and the rear panel looks very elegant. Thus, the TV also comes from the rear to advantage, for example, if he is to work as a room divider in a one-room apartment. To prevent the ugly stripping from tarnishing the impression, a cable sleeve is included. This makes it possible to retouch the power cable, HDMI cable and audio cable in a silky-brown cable jacket.

As for the connections, the Dutchman is well stocked. All important bushes are on board. One of the two USB jacks is used for the recording function. The other then remains free to play media files. They can also be imported via the network. In addition to the LAN socket, a WLAN transponder is also installed, which allows the user to easily access movies, photos and music.

The Philips TV plays almost all file formats. Single horsefoot: With some formats such as AVI, it does not allow fast-forwarding and rewinding, which can interfere with the film evening. The copying to a USB-Stick helps: The fast forward and backward folds. Also as a command receiver or media renderer, the TV is discreet: the Windows 7 PC can only be used to beam photos to the screen.

However, there are hardly any restrictions on its Internet functions. With the most exuberant offer in the test comes no boredom. There are several pay-per-view and free video services like Viewster or sevenload.

News portals such as Tagesschau and kicker.de are available as well as route planners from Falk or TomTom. Also personalized services like Picasa, Facebook and Twitter has the TV intus. For a simple entry of the access data the Philips with the next software version should also be able to recognize USB keyboards.

The installation of the chic 42 -inch takes some time but is relatively simple thanks to the many assistance programs. It starts with the channel search, followed by the image settings and the network configuration, and ends with the formatting of the recording media.

The user can then make further settings in the menu. This allows the user to specify whether his EPG is to be imported from the sender or via the network. The channel EPG is called up faster, but only contains the information provided by the program provider.

The tvtv-EPG, however, pepples the electronic program magazine with further film information from the Internet. A click, and info about the actor will appear. There the film lover can also program his recordings - except the slow slow speed a fine thing.

In the image test the Philips bravely defeated. The sharpness should however be downregulated generously. The already sharp image otherwise gets unpleasant double contours.

With its tidy black, the plasma TV also provided a considerable contrast. Its motion-adaptive image enhancement circuit "HD Natural Motion" provided fluid pans and moving motifs, but did not avoid quite cloudy artefacts.

The 3D image was characterized by a low level of crosstalk. From a distance that is approximately three times the image diagonal, the spatial vision is really fun.
