We have tested Ultrabooks with WQHD displays: so far, Windows users had to access an Apple notebook if they wanted to enjoy a resolution beyond Full HD. Because the MacBook Pro devices have retina displays, the 13-inch device represents 2560 x 1600 pixels, while the 15-inch version has 2880 x 1800 pixels.
Scaling problems
The four ultrabooks from Dell, Fujitsu, Lenovo and Samsung in this comparison test have even sharper "WQHD +" displays with IPS panels: they deliver at resolutions of 13.3, 14 and 15.6 inches Even 3200 x 1800 pixels. The displays are tested on all four devices in touchscreens, according to the operating system Windows 8.1. The touch capability also means that the bank uses reflective displays, non-reflective touch screens are not available in this high resolution.

In Windows 7, menus, buttons, and other controls would only appear tiny, and would be hard to operate, and even with Windows 8, the 200 percent scaling required for the resolution would be difficult to access. Windows 8.1, on the other hand, recognizes the high-resolution screens automatically and sets the scaling to 200 percent. Fonts, menus and icons appear on the 3200 display as well as on a panel with 1600 x 900 pixels, only with high-resolution pictures and with fonts much sharper.
Dell XPS 15: The Power Ultrabook with Large Battery
Windows itself and most programs that use Windows standard elements for the graphical interface are easy to scale with. It is different if a software uses a completely self-knit user interface and was not designed for displays with an extremely high resolution. One example is Cyberlink's PowerDirector 10. Such programs can then only be operated with a magnifying glass.
Fujitsu Lifebook U904: Slim business notebook
The XPS 15 from Dell is the largest with its 15.6-inch display and with nearly 2100 euros also the most expensive device in the test. However, the top-of-the-range XPS-15 series we tested is by far the most powerful Ultrabook with Ultra-HD display on the market. The processor is a fast Intel Core i7 with four cores. The GeForce GT 750M features an upper-mid-range Nvidia chip for graphics.
It delivers more than twice the performance of the processor-integrated HD-4400 graphics unit in games; we measure 10528 points in the 3DMark Cloud Gate. In normal operation the economical Intel graphics is active, the switching is done automatically. This also contributes to the good battery life: in the PCMark 8, the 2 kg notebook holds thanks to its large battery four hours and 21 minutes. The memory is generously sized with 16 GB of memory, a 512 GB SSD is installed as mass storage. The expensive SSD partly explains the high price for the Dell XPS 15. The Dell is at the top of the test field with a good 5661 points in the PCMark 7 with the system performance.
The 15.6-inch Sharp display provides very good picture quality, but with lateral view, as well as with the Fujitsu with light yellow. The Samsung displays in Lenovo and Samsung are still slightly better. The aluminum and carbon fiber housing accommodates four USB charging sockets, three of them with USB 3.0 support. Additional monitors can be connected via HDMI and Mini-DisplayPort. There is no LAN connection, the Intel WLAN adapter already has the new 802.11ac standard and additional Bluetooth 4.0.
The keys of the keyboard with background lighting are pleasantly large. The large touchpad in the rubberized palm rest supports as with other devices gestures with up to four fingers.
The Fujitsu Lifebook U904 combines a 14-inch WQHD + display with typical business features. With a thickness of 15.5 millimeters, the 1.39 kg lightweight U904 is the slimmest 14-inch ultrabook on the market, the sturdy housing is made of magnesium. The Core-i7-4600U with two processors can access 10 GB of memory and provides graphics.
In the pre-set energy saving mode, the CPU goes into the high-performance turbo mode for a short time, which automatically boosts the clock frequency. Therefore the Lifebook with 3175 points in the PCMark 7 is even behind the devices with Core i5 processors. If you set the power settings to maximum power, then the Fujitsu in the PCMark 7 comes to significantly better 4852 points.
In the case of 3D performance, the U904 with 3477 points is the final light, with the battery run time with 276 minutes of the top riders in the test field. As our benchmark constantly demands the notebook, the normal battery life is approximately twice as fast as normal work.
With LAN, dual-band WLAN-n, Bluetooth and the LTE radio the 1850 Euro Ultrabook offers the complete range of communication interfaces. In addition, there are two USB 3.0 ports and one HDMI jack in full format on board. With the keyboard with background lighting, the large cursors are fancy, the key stroke is quite small with about 1.5 millimeters. As with the Dell, a large touchpad with multi-touch function is built in.
The name Yoga is with the 13.3-inch Yoga 2 Pro from Lenovo program: The display can be folded by a double hinge on the back of the chassis, the Yoga turns into a tablet. There are also two stand-up and tent modes for the Lenovo hybrid ultrabook, such as for reading or watching movies. The content of the display is automatically adjusted by means of the position sensor. In addition, all sensors commonly used on tablets are also on board.
Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro: Hybrid Interactive Ultrabook
The 13.3-inch IPS panel comes from Samsung and provides very good picture quality. With a weight of 1.4 kg, yoga can still be used in tablet mode, the illuminated keyboard turns off when the display is rotated by more than 180 degrees.
In the flat orange-colored chassis of the test device, or alternatively there is the device also in decent gray, works an Intel Core i5-4200U as a processor. He also takes over the graphic representation. Despite eight GB of RAM and a 256-GB SSD, the price for the test device is comparatively moderate at almost 1300 Euros. At the interfaces, one was economical: In addition to the cardreader, there are two USB sockets, only one of which is USB 3.0 capable, and a micro HDMI output. The wireless n-adapter with built-in Bluetooth module works only on the densely occupied 2.4 GHz band.
Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus: Ultra-HD in the Ultimate Ultrabook
In the performance measurements the Yoga 2 Pro makes a decent figure: with 4699 points in the PCMark 7, it is behind the Dell in the second place in the system performance, the 3DMark is slightly slower than the same CPU equipped Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus. In the battery life, the Lenovo hybrid occupies 230 minutes in the PCMark 8, but in practice you can work with it for about seven hours.
With a weight of just three kilograms, the superschlanke Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus is the light weight of the notebooks with ultra-HD display. The very good 13.3-inch IPS touchscreen comes from the same company, it is the same as the Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro.
In the only 13.6 millimeter high but still stiff aluminum housing is an Intel Core i5-4200U, the same CPU as in Lenovo. However, the memory and the SSD are only half the capacity compared to yoga with four and 128 GB. Nevertheless, the Samsung with 1550 euro even more expensive.
Conclusion
The recharge time is tidy with 265 minutes. The key stroke of the keyboard with backlighting is short, the tapping by the good layout but pleasant. In addition to two USB 3.0 sockets in normal size, Samsung has the other ports only in mini format housed in the thin aluminum body, for the Gbit LAN Port is an adapter, not for the Micro HDMI jack. The WLAN n controller supports both frequency bands.
In principle, all four Ultrabooks with Ultra-HD display are recommended in the test, also because they appeal to different users. The test winner from Dell is particularly interesting for buyers who are looking for a very good performance and do not interfere with the weight and the price. The Fujitsu can offer business features and the mobile data transmission LTE. For the Samsung Ultrabook, de-sign-conscious buyers can inspire, even if memory and SSD are somewhat more narrowly dimensioned. The Lenovo Yoga is great for anyone looking for an ultrabook that can turn into a tablet. In addition, it is comparatively cheap with almost 1300 euros.
