IFA 2017: Interview with Bertram Gugel

Video: Is the IFA relevant to you as a YouTube expert? Gugel: So far, I’ve always been there. Let’s see if I can make it this year. In any case, I always find it very exciting to go over the fair. I was the last few years just a bit irritated, how many coffee machines are exhibited there. We are currently witnessing the shift in innovation development from hardware to software. This is the area where the IFA is not particularly strong. We see the basis for many software innovations, but not the big trends. This is how the content arrives at the users and in the living room. Also, smartphones and tablets are becoming increasingly important. Since much has changed, the IFA is not the first address.

Video: What are the important trends you are currently seeing? - Gugel: Technologies that allow me to control devices such as TVs from mobile phones or tablets, which means that logic is moving into more flexible products, such as an Apple TV or a Chromecast Test). We have a very high prevalence of smartphones, on which are already found the most services, therefore makes the link meaning.

For example, I do not want to have to enter a password again on the TV for a service I use. There must be smarter solutions. I also find it important that we should get quickly-standardized platforms for the Smart TV solutions, so that no other software has to be developed for every TV generation.

Video: Do you think the latter really realistic ?; Gugel: (laughs) It would be my wish at best.

Video: The IFA has called UHD, HDR and 3D sound as trends. How is your view? Gugel: I understand well why manufacturers offer Ultra-HD and further image and sound enhancements. I only think that a "good enough" effect occurs. I consider the differences in image quality difficult to convey. I see in these technologies when, then again the advantage that I can connect the devices to the Internet, because this is currently the only reasonable way to get 4K and other content on the TV.

Video: Still many are arrested the linear TV. But YouTube has now also a massive significance. What trends do you see in the content? Gugel: YouTube has produced new formats that work well on the platform and, above all, activate target groups between 12 and 24 years. But we will still experience a greater differentiation here. For example, videos that are only made for use on the smartphone and have no sound because they are only intended for viewing in the subway. There will no longer be just one aspect ratio, one transmission standard. But I do not see that we will not have any linear television anymore.

Video: Popular are currently Livestreams via apps like Periscope. Another trend? Gugel: I believe in live, even live events. The challenge with Periscope is to separate the wheat from the chaff. When I stream out of the office unprepared, this is a waste of time for all users. But when I deliver Breaking News or can be with a star on the red carpet, it's really interesting. The range between irrelevant and highly relevant is great. The Livestreams from the demolition of the Topmodel show on ProSieben have shown where the journey can go.
