The selection of PC monitors is large and unclear. As they are not overtaken by the technical progress as fast as the devices connected to it, you should ask yourself a few questions before the purchase, which we will present below.
Application in the field
The cheapest devices already exist for under 100 euros, but for many users it makes sense to invest a little more money. It does not have to be the same as the color-calibrated special monitor for a thousand euros, but a monitor with a built-in TV receiver or a comfortable height adjustment may be useful for some users.
In the sight of bargain hunters
Even if all ultimately "only" display a picture, there are much more differences in monitors than one might believe at first sight. The intended application is therefore the decisive criterion for purchasing. In addition, of course, the financial scope plays a decisive role.
The panel makes the difference
For those with a favorable purchase price in the foreground: Details such as color space cover and ergonomic feet do not pay any attention. Nevertheless, it is important to check a few basic things like the monitor size. This is usually also subdivided into inches here, although the corresponding conversion is usually indicated in centimeters.
Lesetipp
Most buyers now opt for a 23- to 24-inch monitor with a screen diagonal of 58.4 to 61 cm. Increasingly more popular are the scarcely more expensive 27-inch devices with a screen diagonal of almost 69 cm.
Usual for both sizes is a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. The advantage of the 27-inch display is the larger display of icons and fonts, but the display on the 24-inch display - due to the higher pixel density - is somewhat sharper.
What the bargain hunters should pay attention to is the type of panel installed. There are different technologies for display. In the entry-level field, almost exclusively TN panels ("twisted nematic") were used for many years. Only since LG started more than two years ago, on a large scale, favorable IPS panels "unters Volk" to bring, here one has an alternative.
The difference: With TN-devices, there are more or less pronounced color impurities, if one deviates from the optimal sitting position directly in front of the screen. For IPS devices, the colors are more stable, so we advise an IPS or similar PLS device, especially if several people are sitting in front of the screen.
A further purchase criterion are the interfaces of the monitor. At least one digital connection should be available. Here, DVI, HDMI or display port come into question. We advise against screens that only have an analog VGA port, as there is a loss of quality in the picture.
Ultimately, however, decides which outputs the PC or the notebook you want to connect. Even if you can not expect high-quality sound, built-in loudspeakers prove to be useful - even in the bargain class.
If you sit several hours a day in front of the screen, you should pay attention to the comfort of the unit. This property is often combined under the keyword "ergonomics". This includes a height adjustment. The user's view should always be slightly inclined downwards. Monitors with height adjustment are therefore designed in such a way that the uppermost character line is below the eye level.
More and more manufacturers are applying their devices with keywords like "Flicker-Free" or "Flicker-Safe". The reason for this is the background lighting. Since energy-saving LEDs have been installed, sensitive people are increasingly complaining about a flicker effect. The manufacturers have recognized the problem and are working through it with technical improvements.
An overview of flicker-free monitors can be found on the English language page. In addition to the flicker, reflections and reflections on the housing or the display can be disturbing, which is why a matt and anti-reflective device is always to be preferred.
The ideal monitor in the (home) office
For PC players, different priorities apply. An uneven illumination or a poor color space cover hardly interfere here. What is important is a short reaction time, especially if you like fast-paced shooter games. TN panels usually have fast switching times, but thanks to intelligent acceleration functions ("Overdrive") there are now also game-compatible displays with VA or IPS panels that have advantages in color display.
TFTs with a refresh rate of 120 or 144 Hz are not available at TNs. They even make extremely fast movements smooth and allow the use of 3D glasses. Interesting for players could soon be new techniques like G-sync from Nvidia. A module installed in the monitor synchronizes the display refresh rate with the computer's GeForce graphics card.
Monitors for players
Thus, image disturbances such as tearing or jerks are made of the Garaus. Corresponding monitors, however, are still rare and comparatively expensive. This could be the license-free Freesync, which does not require an installed module and which is favored by AMD as an alternative.
While full-HD standard resolution will still be enough for both normal users and players, the manufacturers will compete for buyers in less than 500 euros with a range of low-cost 4K and UltraWide monitors in 2017.
The super-sharp display is impressive, but many programs still have to be adjusted to display all the controls correctly. Another trend is bent displays, which only play their advantages in a multi-screen solution.
