Already in the third generation, the Backes family is the number one on many construction sites: “We are laying out pipelines and pipelines, constructing industrial halls and family houses and paving roads from the Formula 1 circuit to the motorway”, explains the junior boss Thomas Backes The performance spectrum of the Backes group.
Well-networked makes it easier to work
His company currently employs about 350 people at four locations. The headquarters in Stadtkyll in the Eifel is located on a 20-hectare industrial site. This is not just the new administrative building, but also a warehouse as well as a concrete and asphalt plant. To be more independent, Backes Bau produces all the essential building materials. Around 130,000 tons of asphalt are, for example, annually. The resources for this are promoted by employees from five company-owned lava breaches, also in the Eifel.
A reliable contact person
In June 2011, Backes Bau und Transportgruppe opened its doors in Stadtkyll. She worked closely with Telekom in the planning of IT and telecommunications on the new company premises. A CompanyConnect connection is used as a connection to the Internet. With this data, the data is synchronized in five directions with five megabits per second in both directions.
Comprehensive security concept for terrain
To use the fast connection everywhere on the premises, the Telekom networked all buildings of the company site via glass fiber cables. In addition, she installed the T-Octopus telephone system and cordless phones.

How to set up a home network
In order to avoid the cost of telephony, Backes chose the Business Complete tariff with a flat rate for calls to the American landline. As an additional option, the company booked a flat rate for the T-D1 network. The fax function is also integrated into the e-mail client by using a Unified Communications solution. At its other sites, Backes uses DSL connections from Telekom, which are also linked to the network in Stadtkyll.
In addition there are flat rates for fixed telephone and Internet. All sites are also networked via a virtual private network (VPN). Office and industry software as well as computers and printers are also coming from Telekom.
In order to enable employees to focus on their core tasks, Backes uses the Telekom service Rent an Admin. "We used to have constantly changing IT administrators, so we had to explain everything to the new employees," says Thomas Backes. "Today, there is a reliable contact person from the Telekom here, whom we rented almost as a fixed term, and we are extremely satisfied with this solution."
It was particularly important for Backes to protect the extensive grounds of Stadtkyll from fire, theft and vandalism. Now cameras are scanning the entire fenced 25 football fields around the clock - at night with infrared light. Within the scope of the security solution, the cameras, which can be rotated by 360 degrees, are connected to the fiber optic network and can thus be controlled by means of PC software.
Thanks to the virtual private network, the managing directors can also use the cameras on the road or in the home office or zoom in on the terrain. At the building entrances, opening contacts and motion detectors are coupled to an alarm system. In case of burglaries, the management will be informed immediately by e-mail and SMS. If the fixed network is disturbed or sabotaged, the Telekom mobile network will automatically switch on.
In addition, the Backes Group also uses electronic access controls. A chip for each employee replaces key and time recording. This also shows who enters what company building in Stadtkyll. And last but not least, the employees can fill the trucks at the company's petrol station. This is how Backes can even see who has fueled as much fuel.
